Residency Family Medicine, Romania

As a volunteer at the XXXX Veteran Affairs Medical Center, one of the nurses referred to me as: "the best help we have ever had." Hearing this meant a lot to me. This medical center stays especially busy, so I had ample opportunity to demonstrate my work ethic. I am applying to your residency program in the area of Family Medicine because I feel strongly that I have a unique capacity to understand the dynamics of medical issues at the family level. I also feel qualified for a residency position in Family Medicine because of my work in Ob/Gyn. After finishing medical school, during my internships, I spent almost one year in the obstetrics and gynecology ward, where I assisted in gynecological surgeries (fibromas, hysterectomies), caesarian sections, and regular deliveries; I also performed all of the maneuvers for the dilatation and curettage.

I am an immigrant from Romania now living in XXXX, Idaho. I am from the city of Caransebes, and I graduated from medical school in 2001, at the Victor Babes University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Timisoara, Romania. My interest in medicine was aroused early on, at the age of 10, when my father was involved in a terrible car accident with massive head injuries, 13 broken ribs, a broken left clavicle, and punctured lungs. During that time in our country, there were no CT scans, MRIs, or ultrasounds. My family was told by the medical team that he had only a very slim chance of survival, yet, the medical team did go on to save him. I grew up quickly during the eighty-nine days that he was in the hospital and later, after he was released but still could not walk. His doctors became my heroes, and my goal of becoming a doctor became solidified in my mind.

When I was 13, my grandfather developed lung cancer and died soon after. Then my parents went to work in France about the same time that my grandmother developed Ovarian Cancer. I soon found myself an adolescent whose primary role was to care for my grandmother in the absence of my parents. While fighting my grandmother’s cancer, I began to see myself as part of a health care team, sharing a great quest, a noble cause, especially her doctors. I was amazed by the depth of the compassion shown to my grandmother and the efforts made to make her feel as comfortable as possible, all of which continued to reaffirm my sense of professional commitment to my own future. From these experiences caring for my father and grandparents emerge the two fundamental aspects of the specialization that I seek to pursue for the rest of my professional lifetime, family and preventative medicine.

The special needs patients that I work with at the Veteran’s Administration suffer from a broad spectrum of medical afflictions. Each day, I am impressed with the importance of approaching their care in a comprehensive, holistic way, which requires direct involvement in the life of the patient, most of all, becoming aware of all the critical variables that go into deciding upon and implementing a treatment plan that is tailored to their support network, or the lack thereof.  I have come in more contact with the issue of substance abuse and the unique set of challenges that result, dealing with it daily with most of my clients in assisted living. As a medical resident, in addition to the long hours that I crave with direct patient contact, I also hope to become involved with the community, especially in terms of enhancing public awareness about preventive medicine and substance abuse recovery. This is what I most love about the practice of family medicine, the level of involvement with the patients and their families.

I look forward to the constant challenges that Family Practice offers, diagnosing a wide range of diseases, rather than focusing on one particular condition or organ system.

I am confident in my ability to contribute significantly to your program as a medical resident for several reasons. I entered a prestigious medical school in the top 5 % of over one thousand applicants. After coming to the USA, I had to delay my medical career to be able to provide for my family, and I have done so by opening two successful businesses. We have also had our two children, and I now have fatherhood quite well managed. I am now 35 and entirely comfortable using English professionally, I have passed the board exams, and I am finally in a position where I can focus exclusively on my medical career, and my dream of serving as an outstanding family physician. I bring with me extensive experience working with state rules and regulations and helping to maintain our institution in full compliance. I have extensive experience working and living with the elderly, the mentally ill, and special needs clients. Serving them is my greatest pleasure.

I own two assisted living homes, which has taught me a great deal about mental illness, amputations, Alzheimer’s, polysubstance abuse and dependence, oral cancer, lung cancer, hepatitis b and c, diabetes, and traumatic brain injury.

I thank you for considering my application to Family Medicine.
